What is Share of Voice?

Share of voice (SOV) is the percentage of the total conversation or visibility in a market that belongs to one brand versus its competitors. Originally an advertising metric measuring a brand's share of category ad spend, it now commonly covers organic mentions across search results, social platforms, online communities, and AI-assistant answers.

Share of Voice, explained

In its classic advertising sense, share of voice measured what fraction of a category's total advertising a brand bought — the intuition being that a brand consistently out-shouting its market share tends to grow, while one under-spending its share tends to shrink. That relationship between “excess” share of voice and market-share growth is one of the longest-standing heuristics in advertising research.

The digital-era usage is broader and mostly organic. Modern SOV is computed as a simple ratio: your brand's mentions (or impressions, or rankings) divided by the total for all tracked brands in the category, measured per channel. Search SOV counts visibility across category keywords; social SOV counts brand mentions across platforms; community SOV counts how often each brand comes up in forums like Reddit — a channel with outsized weight, since those threads both rank in search engines and get read by high-intent buyers mid-decision.

The newest frontier is share of voice in AI answers: when users ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for the best tool in a category, which brands get named, how often, and in what light. Because answer engines synthesize from sources like reviews, comparison articles, and community threads, AI share of voice is partly downstream of the older kinds — a brand that dominates Reddit and review-site conversation tends to be the one the engines recommend. Trend direction matters more than the absolute number, since methodology (which competitors, which channels, which keywords) varies by tool.

Why it matters for SaaS founders

SOV answers a question founders otherwise argue about with anecdotes: when a buyer researches this category, how often do they encounter us versus the competition? A rising share of community and AI-answer voice usually precedes pipeline growth, because it measures presence at the moments buyers form shortlists. It also localizes the problem — strong search SOV but near-zero Reddit SOV means prospects hear about you from your website and about competitors from people they trust. For early-stage SaaS, community SOV is the most attainable kind: one consistent, helpful presence can outweigh a larger competitor's silence.
